Alamo Heights senior Abby Gray has been named Gatorade’s Texas Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Texas. Gatorade, in collaboration with USA Today, announced the honor on Thursday.
Gray won the UIL Class 5A state championship in November. The Express-News named Gray its Cross Country Girls Runner of the Year for that effort. In addition, Gray was 18th at the Foot Locker Cross Country nationals and 21st at the Nike Cross Nationals.
“I used to be taken aback by some of Abby’s goals, thinking they might be out of reach, but she’s reached nearly every one of them,” Alamo Heights coach Brian Ricketts said in a news release. “She knows what she wants and she won’t let anything get in the way of her achieving it.”
Gray is now a finalist for Gatorade’s National Girls Cross Country of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
Gray, who is signed with Arkansas, is the second area runner in a row to earn this distinction. Paige Hofstad, now a senior at New Braunfels, won it last year.
